A baker’s dozen children learned how to be safe in all sorts of different situations at the Jefferson park and recreation department’s annual Safety Camp last week. This year’s Safety Camp was sponsored by the Jefferson Elks lodge. Most of the children are pictured with (adults, from left) instructor Jennifer Kennedy, Elks Hollie Roberts and Diane Gibson, and instructor Cassidy Adamson. The children will all start kindergarten later this month.
Highlights of Safety Camp were a close-up look at a fire truck as they learned about fire safety from Jefferson firemen James Carman and Derrik Bauer, and a trip on school bus to reinforce a lesson on school bus safety by Robert Stofer of the Greene County Schools. They road the bus to the municipal pool, where pool staff talked with them about water safety.
Other speakers and their topics included Craig Berry of Cyclists of Greene, bicycle safety; Greene County sheriff’s deputy Nathaniel Chapman, gun safety and stranger danger; Kit Huntley of Union Pacific railroad, safety at railroad tracks and crossings; Erin Beardsley of Hy-Vee Drugstore, drug safety; Linn Price of Animal Protection and Educatin (APE) charity, safety around dogs; Marcia Morlan of Greene County EMS, first aid and ambulances; Sarah Reynolds of ISU Extension & Outreach, farm safety; and Heath Enns and Mark Clouse of the Jefferson police department, with sheriff’s deputy Jack Williams and K-9 Leo, seatbelts and vehicle safety.
